Halloween is a time of ghosts and goblins, but it’s also a time for treats and sweets. For children with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease, navigating the candy-filled holiday can be a little tricky. However, with some planning and creativity, you can ensure that your gluten-free little ones have a fantastic and safe Halloween. In this blog post, I will provide my favorite gluten-free Halloween tips for kids.

Educate Your Child
Before the big night, it’s essential to educate your child about gluten and why they need to avoid it. Use simple language appropriate for their age to help them understand why some candies and treats might be off-limits. Empower them with knowledge, so they can make informed choices when offered candies.
Identify Gluten-Free Candy
The first line of defense for a gluten-free Halloween is identifying what candy is safe. Check out my post HERE to access a huge list of gluten-free candy. These lists can even be printed out for you or your child to have as a handy reference while trick or treating.
Look for Teal Pumpkins
The Teal Pumpkin Project was started in 2012 as a global initiative to promote a safe and inclusive Trick-or-treat experience for children with allergies and food restrictions. To participate a teal pumpkin or teal sign is placed in front of a house. This indicates that instead of or alongside traditional candy treats, participants offer non-food items as alternative treats. These can include small toys, stickers, glow sticks, pencils, or other fun and safe items. For more information on the Teal Pumpkin Project visit FARE.

Bring Safe Treats
To avoid disappointment, carry a stash of gluten-free treats with you while trick-or-treating. If your child encounters a situation where they receive gluten-containing candies, you can quickly swap them out with safe alternatives. This way, they can enjoy the Halloween experience without missing out on the fun.
Create a Safe Treat Bag
Designate a special treat bag for your child that is clearly marked as gluten-free. This will help prevent accidental mix-ups with siblings or friends’ treat bags. It’s also a good idea to keep a small supply of gluten-free candies at home for your child to enjoy after the trick-or-treating adventure.
Host a Gluten-Free Halloween Party
Take control of the Halloween treats by hosting your own gluten-free Halloween party. You can bake or buy gluten-free cupcakes, cookies, and other spooky treats, ensuring everything is safe for your child to enjoy. Plus, this way, you can guarantee a night of delicious, gluten-free fun.
Start the Tradition of the Switch Witch
The Switch Witch is a delightful character that is becoming more and more popular, similar to the Elf on the Shelf. She’s often portrayed as a friendly and magical witch who, on Halloween night, visits children’s homes to perform a special kind of magic. Instead of taking their hard-earned candy away, the Switch Witch offers kids an enchanting exchange: she takes a portion of their Halloween candy and, in return, leaves a small gift or toy.
To incorporate the Switch Witch Into Your Halloween Celebration begin by telling your children the tale of the Switch Witch. Explain that she loves Halloween and wants to make sure everyone has a magical and balanced experience. There are books available that tell the tale, which can help to make the story more real and magical. A sweet stuffed doll to cuddle can also further the connection between your child and the Switch Witch.
Click the images below for the Switch Witch book and stuffed dolls. They are adorable!
After trick or treating you can help your children to sort the gluten portion of their Halloween candy to leave for the Switch Witch. Set up a special spot where they can leave their candy and anticipate the exchange. Then on Halloween night, after your children have finished trick-or-treating, help them place their chosen candy in the designated spot and leave the gift for the Switch Witch. In the morning, let them discover the magical exchange that has taken place.
With a little planning and creativity, you can ensure that Halloween remains a magical and gluten-free experience for your child. By educating them about their dietary needs, checking candy labels, and incorporating non-food treats, you can make sure they have a spooktacular celebration without any gluten-related worries. So, let the ghosts and goblins roam, and let your child enjoy a safe and Happy Halloween!

I love these ideas! Incorporating the switch witch is a genius of taking the sting out of glutenous candy. I’m going to share this with my sister since my niece has Celiac’s.

This was a very helpful post. I didn’t know about the teal pumpkin, but am happy to know about it now. I will be more mindful of the candy we hand out this year. The switch witch has been visiting us for a few years due to a nut allergy.
